Melissa Bilbruck — Torch & Soul

Why I built this

I'm Melissa. I didn't build any of this from theory. I built it because I lived through the kind of questioning, second-guessing, and rebuilding that eventually became the reason Torch & Soul exists.

I didn't have an easy start. I grew up in a house where I wasn't safe, and I learned early how to read a room before I learned much of anything else. I became a mother at fifteen. Not long after, I lost my daughter's father.

I spent twenty-five years building a business from nothing. I grew it with my own hands, made it into something real, and eventually walked away from it. Not because it failed. Because there are times in life when rebuilding means being willing to leave behind something you worked incredibly hard to build.

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, I found myself in not one but two relationships where I spent years questioning what I was seeing and second-guessing my own reactions.

I know what it feels like to catch a lie and somehow end up apologizing for noticing it. I know what it feels like to replay the same conversation a hundred times, trying to figure out what actually happened, whether you overreacted, and why the explanation still doesn't settle the question.

I lost my spouse to suicide. There's no clean way to write that sentence, so I'm not going to try to make it sound like anything other than what it was. It was one of the hardest things I have ever lived through, and I carry it with me still.

After that, I packed up and moved to Illinois. Alone. I didn't have a plan, and I didn't have anyone waiting for me there. I just knew I couldn't keep building a life on top of everything that had happened without a fresh piece of ground to stand on.

I tell you all of this not because I want sympathy. I tell you because I want you to understand where this work comes from. When I talk about replaying what happened, questioning your own reaction, trying to make an explanation fit, or rebuilding after you've spent too long focused on someone else's behavior, I'm not talking about it from a distance. I've sat inside those questions myself. More than once, and in more than one kind of loss.

Torch & Soul grew out of what I needed when I was the one stuck inside those questions. I needed something that didn't tell me what I was supposed to think. I needed a way to slow down what happened, separate what I could actually point to from what I couldn't know yet, and figure out which question really needed my attention.

That's what I build here now. Practical tools for the moments that can keep you spinning: when the explanation still doesn't make sense, when you're wondering if someone else is involved, when they say they've changed, when you still have to deal with them, when they've gone silent, and when you're trying to stop losing your footing every time the pressure changes.

No diagnosing someone I've never met. No pretending uncertainty is certainty. No telling you whether to stay or leave. Just a clearer way to look at what's in front of you and decide what deserves your attention next.

That's what I'm doing here. Not standing above you like I have every answer. Not telling you what your relationship is or what you're supposed to do with it. I'm sitting beside you, helping you slow the question down long enough to see what you actually have, what you don't know yet, and where you can stand from here.
